Assassins Assemble, The Ms. Marvel Maybe, and Another Dreadful Night [Nerd Girl Corner]

It’s Fri-YAY y’all, and I didn’t want the weekend to start without me dropping off a little nerdy news that I’m all kinds of excited about.

After last week’s unintentional hiatus (hey, it was Memorial weekend?!), I’m back with some tid bits that I’m finding all kinds of intriguing. Shall we begin?

First up, we’ve got Assassin’s Creed.

I will be the first to admit that I never in my life played this game. If we’re talking about Tomb Raider, then you can holla at me, but I’m completely clueless when it comes to this saga.

Actually, that’s not true; my sister made me listen to an audio book based on the game, Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance. Aside from that, I know nothing.

Either way, the first trailer for the film was released with Young Magneto Michael Fassbender and it looks halfway decent.

It seems like some time travel is happening, a lot of assassin training, and there’s a female warrior in the mix, so I’m happy about that. Other than that, I don’t have much feelings on the matter.

Moving on…

So with Captain America: Civil War still fresh on everyone’s mind (BTW, that movie was good AF, please go see it!), the Marvel universe is already gearing up for its first female-led superhero flick. I would say it’s about god damn time, but this film isn’t going to be out for years, so I’ll wait ’til it actually hits to say something.

Anywho, in the past few days, it was reported actress Brie Lawson was the favorite for the lead in the film and now there’s talk she’s nearing a deal.

I’m not big on the Ms. Marvel mythos aside from what I learned about her in the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoons, but she seems pretty bad ass. Also, she has ties to how Rogue got her super strength and flight (though we NEVER saw it in an X-Men film, but I digress), so I’m interested to see who this lady is.

From what I gather, Bree is a great actress and I remember her being super snarky and funny in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World movie. If she does get the job, I hope to see some of that humor injected into the action film.

And last but not least

The live-action Beauty & The Beast released its first teaser for the film. Now, you guys know how much I love my Disney movies — I have a whole section on this blog dedicated to how it hurts my head, but teaches valuable lessons.

So, Disney drops this teaser with the new flick starring Emma Watson as Belle.

As a B&TB fan, I can already tell you what I like: I love the fact that they used the same exact music from the intro of the cartoon film and even did some panoramic shots from the film to mirror some of the scenes from the animated film, including Beast scratching the ish out of his portrait. Even some of the dialogue is the similar.

I also noticed that Beast’s portrait also included his parents — something that was never addressed in the cartoon (and something I definitely had questions about as an adult), and I can totally dig it if they touch on that in the film.

Other than that, I’m OK with Ewan McGregor’s Lumiere (though I’d like it better if it was Kevin Kline playing that role instead of Belle’s dad, Maurice) and I can tell I’ll like Ian McKellon’s Cogsworth.

I’m anxious to see my girl Gugu MBatha-Raw as Plumette the feather duster and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. I’m not familiar with Dan Stevens, the guy who’s playing Beast, but he needs to bring it ’cause Beast was bad as an animal and fione as a human.

It’s not coming out ’til 2017, so I got another year and an official trailer before I can truly get in my feelings.

Honorable mentions:

Penny Dreadful has been pretty on point for Season 3 and I’m loving it. Though I was initially sad that Showtime didn’t have an event this year to kick off the show, lo and behold, they send this girl an invite to a screening for Episode 6 on Sunday, June 5 with Reeve Carney aka Dorian Gray!

tumblr_mxo7f50uai1s2n2qpo1_250Viewers will get to catch the episode as well as a special Q&A with the actor and I’ll be documenting it all on Periscope for Black Girl Nerds via @BlackGirlGeeks so be sure to check in on Sunday, June 5.

With any luck, I’ll be back in time to live-tweet #DemDreads with the rest of my PD fam.

Until then, keep geeking folks and feel free to drop a line in the comments or hit me up on le Twitter!
