Legend of Korra Season 4, Episode 4: “The Calling” Post-Cap — Nerd Girl Corner

Hey there, Korra Nation! First of all, I apologize for the tardiness of this post — I never intended for this post to take this long to make it to your eyes, but it’s here! As many of you know, The Legend of Korra Book 4: Balance aired its newest episode, “The Calling” on October 25. As promised, I’ve written a recap (which can be found on Black Girl Nerds) in case you haven’t checked it out yet, but now it’s time for this week’s post-cap! Some of you are probably wondering just what is a “post-cap,” but just know it’s a make-believe term I created that by definition is mixed of thoughts, feelings, etc. that one may have after reading (in my case, writing) a recap. Hence, “post-cap”. I know I could as easily have called it a “review,” but I like to do things my way. Got it? Good.

What I’m Diggin’ And Why You Should Be Diggin’ It Too — Upcoming Shows Edition

‘A lo, ladies and gents!

I’m back again when another installment of all the things I’m diggin’ and why you should be diggin’ them too. For tonight, I’ve decided to take a look at some of the shows that are coming soon to a TV near you and which ones have actually got me ready to set my reminders for its premieres.

So, first on my list of  TV shows I’m interested in:

Penny Dreadful

Synopsis:  “Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, and others unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.”

Status:  Season 1 premiere on May, 11 at 10 p.m. (Showtime)

Why I’m Interested: Like some people out there, I can go for a good re-imagining of Gothic novel characters. If you haven’t seen the first episode of this new show, then you probably should. It looks like it’s gearing up to give you a good mix of characters we’ve seen from books/movies like Dracula, and Frankenstein, but all cleverly mixed together a la The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. The other reasons that I’m looking forward to this show: Eva Green (my goddess) and the return of Josh Hartnett. I’m already interested to see which characters (famous or not seen on paper) we’ll encounter on this show (spoiler: we meet one in the series premiere) and to also see how they all connect in some larger supernatural scheme of things.

Did I mention Eva Green was going to be in it, too?

Bottom line: If you like a good Gothic horror story re-imagined in some form, then this might tickle your fancy.

Next up…

 Gotham

Synopsis: “The origin story behind Commissioner James Gordon’s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman’s arrival.”

Status:  Season 1 premiere in Fall 2014 (FOX)

Why I’m Interested: I’m always up for a good Batman-inspired something or the other, and this time we’re not going to see the caped crusader, but instead Commissioner Gordon before her was the Commissioner. Ooooh. From the extended trailer, we also see that we’re going to get a black female mob boss in the form of Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett) and we’re going to see all our favorite bad people — Riddler, Penguin, Cat Woman, Poison Ivy, and the Joker (yes, the Joker!) — before Batsy got his claws in them.

Bottom line: This looks like the makings of a good origins show, so I’m gonna give it a chance.

And last, but certainly not least ,

Hieroglyph

Synopsis:  “A notorious thief is plucked out of the prison to serve a Pharaoh obsessed with maintaining power.”

Status:  Season 1 premiere (FOX)

Why I’m Interested:  This show’s got my interest for the fact that it’s set in Ancient Egypt and/or is Ancient Egyptian themed. As a child, I wanted to be an Egyptologist, so finally seeing something of a culture in history that I adore ON TV is exciting to me. As it stands, we’ve had period shows from The Renaissance (Da Vinci’s Demons), Victorian, England (Penny Dreadful, Dracula), Colonial Times (Black Sails), Reign of the Tudors (The Tudors, The White Queen), and even Ancient Rome (Rome) and Ancient Greece (Xena, Hercules). Finally, Ancient Egypt is getting some shine. Oh, and Condola Rashad is playing Queen Nefertari, so that’s a win-win for me too. Don’t know what to expect, but I’m willing to watch it and see where it goes.

Bottom line: If you’re a history buff, then you should probably give it a shot.

And that’s what I’ve got for this week’s upcoming TV edition. Tune in next week to see if your show tops my list, and remember if you’ve got any suggestions, feel free to send them my way.

Until then,

What I’m Diggin’ And Why You Should Be Diggin’ It Too — Canceled Edition

‘A lo, ladies and gents!

I’m back again when another installment of all the things I’m diggin’ and why you should be diggin’ them too. But for tonight, I’ve decided to go shed a tear for the shows that have come and gone (coincidentally all after one season) that I thoroughly enjoyed and cursed the heavens for taking  away from me.

Hey, if people can mourn family, celebrities, and their pet goldfish, I can mourn television shows.

So, first on my list of  canceled TV shows that I miss:

Wedding Band

Synopsis:  “Lifelong friends play in a band for hire.”

Status:  Canceled after Season 1 (TBS)

Why I’m Missin’ It:This show was basically Glee, but for cool adults (no offense to Glee or anything). First off, it brought back Brian Austin Green as the frontman of a wedding band that played some of the most awesome renditions of pop songs. And I believe it was all their own singing, too. Harold Perrineau was the cool guy who played for every famous rock band alive, while Derek Miller and Peter Cambor were the brothers who were polar opposites with a passion for playing music. I’m sorry guys, but this show was like The Hangover with musical tidbits in between. Oh, and lest not forget Melora Hardin as the sexy, vampy, boss who took “Get Ur Freak On” to another level.

Bottom line: This show had guts. And it was fun. And it TBS did a better job of not putting it on Saturday nights, it would’ve been a fan favorite.

Next up…

 Almost Human

Synopsis: “In a not-so-distant future, human cops and androids partner up to protect and serve.”

Status:  Canceled after Season 1 (FOX)

Why I’m Missin’ It:   OK. So this show gave a bit of mixed feelings for some. And I will admit, I wasn’t able to always catch it (due to work), but when I did watch it, it always kept me entertained. I binged on the last four episodes without further thought and was ready to find out what the hell happened to Karl Urban’s character, Kennex, whose ex-girlfriend (a black actress, woot!) was a part of a terrorist organization. I also wanted to know what was going to happen to Michael Ealy’s character, Dorian, and if he was actual (dum, dum, DUM) human before becoming a robot! This show had a good premise, and it was a good mix of science fiction without being too ahead in the future to be relatable. It was good balance of I-Robot, Gattaca, and AI, which is the reason why I kept coming back.

And let’s be really honest: who the freak wouldn’t want to look into Michael Ealy’s beautiful eyes one hour a week, huh?

Bottom Line: Fox is known for not giving good shows and chance and they totally missed the mark with Almost Human. If only Syfy or FX would pick the show up and give it new life, this show would be make Fox cry in shame.

And last, but certainly not least:

Camelot

Camelot; 2011

Synopsis:  “King Uther dies suddenly. Britain is facing chaos. The sorcerer Merlin appoints the not so known son and heir Arthur as the king who was raised as a commoner, but his half sister has other plans. Arthur faces tough times and will be tested beyond imagination.”

Status:  Canceled after Season 1 (Starz)

Why I’m Missin’ It:  If you know anything about me, you’ll know that I’m a history/fantasy/mythology nut bag. And this show gave me a great mixture of it all. It worked in the magical aspect of the King Arthur story without beating it over the head, and it had the right amount of sexiness without being gratuitous. This show also had a pretty sweet cast with (the secret not-so-secret love of my life) Eva Green as Morgan Le Fey (neé Pendragon), Joseph Fiennes as Merlin, and Tamsin Egerton as Guinevere. I will mourn this show. I will mourn this show so much — especially since it ended right when things were getting so good. And my biggest peeve with this show? It didn’t have bad ratings! The real reason Starz bumped this show off the rost was because it didn’t bring enough new subscribers to the network. Le sigh, man. Le sigh.

Good lord, she gives me a lady boner.

Bottom line: This show didn’t have to end and Starz is a giant poop face for letting this gem go.

And that’s what I’ve got for this week’s canceled TV edition. Tune in next week to see if your show tops my list, and remember if you’ve got any suggestions, feel free to send them my way.

Until then,

What I’m Diggin’ And Why You Should Be Diggin’ It Too — Flashback Edition

‘A lo, ladies and gents!

I’m back again when another installment of all the things I’m diggin’ and why you should be diggin’ them too. But for tonight, I’ve decided to go back in time into yesteryear when TV was a lot simpler and list some (yes, not all) of the TV shows that are currently in syndication years after they’ve been cancelled that I still watch.

Hey, great TV is great TV — no matter how old it is, how young you were when it came out, or how old the actors on it are.

So, first on my list of “Flashback TV” to watch:

The Golden Girls

Synopsis: “Four previously married women live together in Miami, sharing their various experiences together and enjoying themselves despite hard times.”

Status: In syndication on Hallmark Channel, Lifetime Channel

Why I’m Diggin’ It: What is not to love about four witty old broads — Dorothy, Blanch, Sophia, and Rose — talking about life, love, and sex while eating cheesecake? I wasn’t old enough to know and appreciate this show when it was around, but as an adult I can laugh along with every single joke, or sympathize with almost every situation (except for the hot flashes — I haven’t reached there yet). With that said, the show is a true testament to “things that never get old.” And the best part? If this show is still around when I turn 50, I’ll have something on TV catering to my age demographic!

Bottom line: If you loved Sex and the City, this show is basically Carey Bradshaw and the gang much older and living under one roof.

Next up…

Martin

Synopsis: “The random misadventures of Martin Payne, an abrasive, loud-mouthed (though somewhat insecure) Detroit talk show host and his assortment of friends and enemies.”

Status: In syndication on Centric TV, MTV 2

Why I’m Diggin’ It: It’s rare these days to have television shows about nothing in particular… while still being entertaining. Martin was a product of the era in TV where we followed peoples’ lives set in motion by creative writing and exceptional comedic timing. Not to mention, star Martin Lawrence played a solid EIGHT characters during the show’s run, including titular character Martin Payne. Each character was well-developed and distinct and at times, you forgot it was actually Martin! This show is guaranteed to give me a belly full of laughs every time I watch.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking to catch Martin Lawrence at his ABSOLUTE funniest, do yourself the favor and watch this show.

Finally,

The Cosby Show

Synopsis: “The goings-on in the life of a successful African American family.”

Status: In syndication on Centric TV, TV Land, Nick at Nite

Why I’m Diggin’ It: Is that really a questions? The synopsis says it all. Cliff was a doctor, Claire was a lawyer, they lived in a brownstone in Brooklyn, NY with five children. Yeah, that may sound boring, but this show had it ALL — comedy, drama, social awareness — without being overbearing and preachy. With all the things this family had going on, I wanted to be a Huxtable.

Bottom line: If you want to watch quite possibly the best family sitcom of our time that probably opened the door for other shows like it, watch it. Nothing beats the original.

I just had to…

If you don’t know what this is, you should Google and/or YouTube                 “Gordon Gartrell”

And for honorable mention…

Living Single

Synopsis: “Lives of several single male and female roommates and friends in the 90’s Brooklyn, New York.”

Status: In syndication on We TV and Logo

Why I’m Diggin’ It: There was the sexpot workaholic, the jazz-singing stock broker, the stylish man hunter, the tomboy journalist, the loveable goofy ball actress, and the wisdom-filled handyman. All living in an apartment building in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up, they had the kind of lifestyle and friendship I could only dream of having as an adult.

Bottom Line: If you like Sex and the City, but want a little more comedy in your diet, Living Single goes down smooth.

And that’s what I’ve got for this week’s Flashback edition. Tune in next week to see if your show tops my list, and remember if you’ve got any suggestions, feel free to send them my way.

Until then,

My Undying, Unflinching Love Affair With Disney’s Gargoyles

So I recently wrote a post for BlackGirlNerds.com about my love affair with Gargoyles and well, I decided that I should post it here as well … just in case some of you guys are hardcore fans.

I can’t deny it. I am a girl who is hopelessly in love with the cartoons of the ‘90s. These shows probably sculpted quite a bit of the geekiness that I’ve come to embrace in my life, but no show has possibly affected me more than Disney’s Gargoyles. When the show debuted in 1994, the opening score immediately drew me in (and to this day I still hum it). It was dark, scary, and (as I continued to watch) more than what met the eye.

If you’re not familiar with this amazingly awesome show, then you should be ashamed of yourself. But just to bring you up to speed, Gargoyles followed a clan of nocturnal creatures aka gargoyles that turned to stone by day and were warriors by night. After being betrayed by the humans they swore to protect, the clan was placed under a magical spell that turned them entirely to stone. A millennia later, billionaire David Xanatos (voiced by Jonathan Frakes) purchased their Scotland home and implanted them on his New York City skyscraper, where the spell was broken and they’re brought back to life. Tell me that doesn’t sound like a hot ass show to you?

From bottom left to right: Bronx, Hudson, Goliath, Broadway, Brooklyn, and Lexington (bottom center)
But it gets better.

The gargoyles, led by Goliath (voiced by actor Keith David), must now adapt to their new surroundings and they make a new friend in the process — police detective Elisa Maza (voiced by Salli Richardson) who in turn becomes their human guardian. Initially the show starts off with billionaire Xanatos trying to “befriend” the gargoyles for his own schemes of world domination, but later the show gets layered with the ever growing yet low-key attraction between Goliath and Elisa. It was obvious these two loved each other, but couldn’t be together because they were two different species. I mean, who didn’t hear Keith’s voice and melt instantly, right? But it gets better when Demona, Goliath’s former lover, came on the scene. Not only was she one hell of a villainess with her plot for human genocide, she was especially hateful towards Elisa for being the new object of Goliath’s affection. This ultimately made her hate towards humans richer. Oh — Demona was also Goliath’s baby mama. Yeah.

Much later we learned that some of the gargoyle eggs were saved before the horrifying betrayal (seen in the opening credits) and one of them is Goliath and Demona’s daughter, Angela. She joined the clan (which up until this point was strictly male), and tensions rose almost instantly between Broadway and Brooklyn. Broadway ultimately won Angela’s heart, but that led Brooklyn down a dark path for a while and boy wasn’t it one hell of plot line.

The show would weave Celtic lore and Norse mythology with characters from Shakespearean plays and — no lie — prepared me for college lit and history classes. As a child, I wasn’t attune to everything that was going on, but there were some things that I could truly appreciate. For instance, Elisa Maza was probably the first bi-racial cartoon character I had seen on TV. Being the daughter of an Amerindian father & African-American mother meant the world to me because we were finally seeing a real representation of the people who reside in NYC — multi-ethnic. We saw that Elisa had a brother and a sister and they were all different colors: her brother was a dark-skinned, while her sister was a little lighter with curly hair. And as for the police chief? She was a Latina named Chavez. Realism was on this show, whether you liked it or not.

Gargoyles exposed its viewers to different cultures; in one episode we learned of Anansi the Spider in Nigeria, and the legend of the black panther (or jaguar — I don’t know my felines that well) while on another episode we met Coyote the Trickster and understood his role in Native-American mythology. We saw King Arthur in his tomb on Avalon and the purported “aliens” that came to Easter Island. I learned the Oden was missing an eye before I watched Thor and met Macbeth before reading the play in high school. To sum it all up, this show had everything for me. There was action, history, magic, myth, love, and it was wrapped up so beautifully, that it effortlessly caused me to want to know all these “nerdy” things. This show was the beginning of my “blerdy” journey, if you will. I will admit, I didn’t keep up with the show during its final run in 1997. By then, the show moved from weekday afternoons to Saturday mornings which was a major bummer. It was only showing once a week AND on the day I was allowed to sleep late.

Trying to catch up with it was a task and I couldn’t keep up. When I heard it was cancelled, I was so upset, but the show lives on in me forever … obviously. I intend to find the Gargoyles DVD on Amazon, buy them, and have my own children watch them (when I have children, that is). Now excuse me, while I hum the theme song to sleep and imagine Goliath roaring into the night’s sky.

I am currently contemplating my next post … which will more than likely be cartoon related, as I really do miss the cartoons of my childhood.

Had a Grimm Night With Silas Weir Mitchell!

Hey there!

As I mentioned earlier, I’m going to try to “blog” as much as possible — even if it’s not book/writing related because there is more to moi than just my book-reading and novel writing. Any who, just wanted to say that last night was such a SPECTACULAR night for me and I couldn’t be any happier that the stars FINALLY aligned in my favor! I, along with a couple other fans, got to speak with Silas Weir Mitchell from my fave show, Grimm!

Actor Silas Weir Mitchell

Yes. I got to speak to Mr. Monroe on a live chat forum on Huffington Post Live. << Click the link to check the video and forgive my awkwardness — I had technical difficulties about a second before the show aired where I couldn’t see myself at all and thus I had a bad camera angle, stared into space and bit my lip a lot…>>

It all started when I was approached on Twitter (probably because of my fanatic live tweeting) to do the segment Monday night. I thought I missed my chance because when I responded I didn’t hear back from the producer, but then Tuesday afternoon I got a text asking if I was still interested. Of course my answer was:

If you’re a Grimm fan such as myself, you can understand the amount of happy that was flowing through my body.

So I and another fan, Courtney Wood of Grimm-fan.com, got all set up and after about eleven minutes of the show’s host getting Silas all warmed up, we were on screen asking him questions! Though before the chat they told us we could get like 3-4 , we were only given two a piece due to lack of time. Whomp.

I really wanted to ask Silas what kind of Wesen baby he thought Monroe and Rosalee would have (Blutbad, Fuchsbau, or a Fuchsbad-Blutbau hybrid) , but I got two questions out — one he said “was a good question” and another where he commended me for using proper Wesen terminology. Of course, I was like:

After showing my sisters (who are also Grimm fans) the segment and hearing my mom squeal at the sight of me on a live streaming show, I came down from cloud 9 a bit to do my live tweeting for Grimm’s season finale. *SIDE NOTE* It took me a long friggin’ time to be recognized by Grimm’s Twitter page up until maybe last month. Then they switched the show from Friday to Tuesday and I guess the Grimm Twitter handler on Tuesday hasn’t recognize my awesomeness yet, so I haven’t been retweeted since.

Any who, I was hoping to be picked up by the Grimm Twitter feed for the finale, but instead I got a favorite from actress Bitsie Tulloch aka Juliette.

Bitsie Tulloch Favorites My Grimm Finale Tweet

Now this isn’t the first time Bitsie favorited my tweet. This is actually like the fourth time. But it shows that girly likes what I say. And apparently, last night she really liked what I said because she tweeted this at me:

Bitsie Tulloch Tweets She Digs My Grimm Finale Hashtag

Yeah, that happened. And then sometime later actor Reggie Lee aka Sgt. Wu favorited my tweet about him.

Reggie Lee Favorites My Grimm Finale Tweet

It’s not the first time he’s done that, but you know it was like Grimm actor overload for me last night and I was loving

EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE.

Oh yeah, *completely off topic* I helped a blind guy off the train yesterday. And I felt really good about doing it.  That’s it for now. Be sure to click the links because they are live and you can see me, tweet at me, and everyone else mentioned in this post.

Con amor,
-Alja

Xhibit P: The Xhibit P Pop UP!!

The Pop Up: 2011-12-08

WRITTEN BY AFIYA AUGUSTINE

Hollywood moves fast, so we keep the pace for you. “The Pop Up” brings you the latest news happening in pop culture, to keep you up to speed in your daily conversations. We weed out the wackness, and deliver quality links that will make you the go-to person for the inside scoop.
It can be said that Bob Marley’s music was an influential force that allowed the people of South Africa to deal with apartheid and bring it to its knees. Now, Bob Marley’s music is once again bringing the people of Africa some ease in the continent’s hour of need. Using a line from Marley’s song “High Tide of Low Tide,” a new social media campaign called “I’m Gonna Be Your Friend,” kicked off Tuesday, has celebrities like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Britney Spears urging fans to help alleviate the widespread famine going on in East Africa. As it stands twelve million people have been affected by the hunger crisis, Somalia getting the worst of the sting.

Through promoting a short film on the crisis in East Africa by award-winning director Kevin MacDonald (Last King in Scotland) set to “High Tide or Low Tide” on twitter and facebook pages, celebs are hoping that fans will watch the video and donate money with proceeds going to the Save the Children foundation in an effort to provide food, water and medicine. The video is also on sale with
proceeds going towards the foundation as well.

“Not one child should be denied food nor water. Not one child should suffer,” said Rita Marley, Bob Marley’s wife. “Along with Save the Children, we must stand up together as friends to put a stop to this, to feed our children and to save their lives,”

In other news, High School Musical director Kenny Ortega has announced that he will direct a re-make to the 1987 cult-classic Dirty Dancing. The original film featured the fancy footwork (choreographed by Ortega himself) performed by the late Patrick Swayze and Dancing with the Stars
winner Jennifer Grey and contained the infamous line –“No one puts Baby in a corner.” The film made both actors unforgettable and songs like “She’s like the Wind,” “I Had the Time of My Life,” and “Hungry Eyes,” the most recognizable tunes throughout the years. While many fear the re-make will not live up to the legacy the original has created, Grey tweeted yesterday that she supported the re-make: “I love @Kennyortega and trust that he will do something special #DirtyDancingRemake.” Fans are skeptical about the re-make and are holding their breath to see who will fill those great big dancing shoes.

Funny man and 30 Rock actor Alec Baldwin has announced that he would like to run for the NYC Mayoral seat , but after 2013 when he “learns more about the job.” Currently he resides in LI, but intends on living permanently in the city before running.

And in case you haven’t heard, thanks to persistent internet demands, Nickelodeon has brought back all its hit ‘90s shows for their now post-college audience every night at 12 midnight on Teen Nick. That’s right, favorite shows including “All That,” “Kenan & Kel,” “Clarissa Explains it All,” and “Doug” will show on the station until 4 a.m. with the opportunity to expand and include more shows depending on viewer suggestions.
