What I’m Currently Diggin’ — And Why You Should Be Diggin’ It Too!

Here’s the deal:  I’ve been told that I watch way too much TV — and it’s partially true. I watch quite a few shows, but the only problem is that I tend to watch things that not a lot of my pals are into. And it’s pretty damn frustrating when I’m ready to go head first into my theories, likes, dislikes, etc., and I find there’s no one around to speak to. Le sigh. So, why is it that I’m the lone viewer in my crew? This can be one of two reasons: either I’m just very open-minded when it comes to TV (aka “weird”) or my friends/fam just don’t get why I’m into these shows.

Well ladies and gents, today is your LUCKY day! I’ve decided that I’m going to put you guys on to a series of shows that I’m diggin’ and that you could to like too. Now I figure that my list today may or may not strike a chord in some of you, so I intend to do this every week until I’ve found some kindred spirits. Oh, and it won’t just be TV shows either, but for right now, we’re gonna start things off a little light.

So, what shows am I going to talk about first? Let’s just see, shall we:

The Blacklist (Mon. 10 p.m. ET on NBC)

Synopsis: “Former government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) has eluded capture for decades. But he suddenly surrenders to the FBI with an offer to help catch a terrorist under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone), a young FBI profiler who’s just barely out of Quantico. “

Status: Currently in Season 1

Why I’m Diggin’ It: First and foremost, the show’s star, James Spader, is the freaking man. I don’t care how much weight he’s gained, or how much hair he’s lost. There’s something about this guy’s caliber of acting that just makes you all tingly when you see it in action. When James talks, it just demands your attention and his role as the ever-conniving informant is quite possibly one of the best things I’ve seen on TV.

Bottom line: If you like shows with characters that are masters of manipulation, then you’ll enjoy this.

Next up…

Grimm (Fri. 9 p.m. on NBC)

Synopsis: “A homicide detective discovers he is a descendant of hunters who fight supernatural forces.”

Status: Currently in Season 3

Why I’m Diggin’ It: I think my feelings on this show have been made quite clear by this point, but what I absolutely love about this show is that it’s got cop action, family drama, and a unique take on the characters of the Grimm’s fairy tales. It’s fantasy without being too over-the-top, while simultaneously not taking itself too serious. Every week there’s something new, while staying true to the core of the show and that to me makes for fun TV.

Bottom line: If you like shows that reshape the fairy tales you grew up loving, then you’ll enjoy this.

And finally…

Resurrection (Sun. 9 p.m. on ABC)

Synopsis: “The lives of the people of Arcadia, Missouri, are forever changed when their deceased loved ones return.”

Status: Currently in Season 1

Wouldn’t you want to know why your dead aunt popped up on YOUR doorstep?

Why I’m Diggin’ It: This new show kicks off with a little boy named Jacob waking up in China, and ends with us learning that he’s been dead for about 30 years. With every episode seemingly adding another dead loved one returning to their family (or possibly in hiding), this show is interesting to say the least. These walking dead — not like those Walking Dead — are all somehow connected, and the shady Sheriff Fred, his inquisitive daughter, Maggie, and federal agent Marty (Omar Epps) all want to piece the bizarre clues together. Meanwhile, we’re learning that more dead people are coming back and they might not be as friendly as the ones we’ve seen…

Bottom line: If you’re looking to take a chance on a show filled with mystery and head scratching, then you’ll enjoy this.

These are the shows I’ve got so far, but I’ll be back next week with yet another list, but in the meantime I hope you give these shows a shot! If you’ve got some suggestions, be sure to send them my way. Until then,

Are you already a fan? Let’s chat about it in the comments and connect on Twitter to live-tweet the next episode!

Da Vinci’s Demons Arrive at My Doorstep

After having a wonderful time chatting it up with Silas Weir Mitchell of Grimm last week (check the screenshot of me doing my thing), my week got infinitely better as I was approached by the beautiful social media team at Starz’s new original series Da Vinci’s Demons to receive some gear.

For those of you completely unaware of what the show is about, it’s basically a re-imagining of the world renowned artist, sculptor, scientist and all-around genius that is Leonardo Da Vinci. At first, I wasn’t too sure about it (mainly because  DD airs the same time as Grimm did —  Friday nights at 9 PM — before Grimm moved to Tuesdays), but after watching the first three episodes back-to-back-to-back, I got into it. I even started following the Da Vinci’s Demons Twitter account and would engage with other watchers/followers and say the random odd thing.

As usual, I didn’t expect anyone to really give two craps about what I thought, until this happened:

5-29-2013 5-04-22 PM

Yeah. They followed me. That ACTUALLY happened.

That’s only ever happened once before, and that was with Starz’s Camelot (which I’m still mourning by the way). Any how, it  looks like DD liked the fact that I engaged with them because they’d re-tweet or favorite my tweets.

5-29-2013 5-08-52 PM5-29-2013 5-09-28 PMNext thing I know, either a day or two after my live chat with Silas, DD DMs me, thanks me for my support and asks for my address to send some gear. Naturally, I was like:

So I send them my information, and for a while, I thought that they probably forgot about me until my brother-in-law hands me a parcel that he mistook for a package for my sister. Like a giddy schoolgirl, I opened it up and looked at my swag:

I got a t-shirt with the words “Arrogant Visionary Bastard” written across the front and the DD logo in the back with the Vitruvian Man in the upper corner, along with two tweed satchels to hold stuff in (like they do on the show) and a cardboard container housing some really cool wooden pencils, cleverly constructed cardboard pens, and a wooden sharpener.

They also sent me a letter (albeit generic, but still a nice one) saying:

“Hi Alj,

Thanks for following and engaging with us on Twitter! We hope you’re enjoying Da Vinci’s Demons and plan to tune-in every Friday at 9pm EST on Starz.

Here is some great gear we think you’ll enjoy. Keep following the conversation on @DaVincis_Starz and please @mention us and include the hastag #DaVincisDemons. We look forward to your tweets about the show!

Your friends at Da Vinci’s Demons”

So I look at it and go:

“Is all of this is for me, just for being a good fan?”

Well then, let the fangirling continue!!

Of course, I made sure to let my new friends at Da Vinci’s Demons know how thankful I was for the gift and they were just too kind to respond back!

5-29-2013 5-37-23 PM

Before, I thought fangirling was just a lost cause — especially since I’ve been a fan to countless shows without any kind of recognition what-so-ever. But at the same time, tons of other people are fans too, so why should they acknowledge me?  Now, I have renewed hope in my fanatical endeavors. And who knows maybe this little token might show up on my doorstep the next time:

I know, I know,  it won’t happen. But hopefully that little meat puppet that is Tom Riley will respond to one of my tweets. Then I’ll finally know that he knows I exist, and I can run around screaming

As always guys, click on the links because they are active and don’t forget to check out Da Vinci’s Demons on Fridays at 9 PM.

I’m Making a Triumphant Return! Maybe…

Hello all!

I have to admit, I am utterly ashamed of myself. By not writing to you all (on a consistent basis), I’m failing myself. So, I make a resolution (once again) to jump right back into being a more frequent blogger. Lord knows it’ll take some time, but I’m going to work hard towards it. Even if I have to write about things that do not pertain to my several unfinished novels (which I intend on working on).

First on the list, the book I am currently reading: The Left Hand of Darkness by  Ursula K. LeGuin.

So if you guys know me, you know that I have sort of a soft spot for science fiction and fantasy.  I stumbled upon the book after hearing it referenced in that movie The Jane Austen Book Club, which was also based on a book. I figured if one of the main characters made such an argument for his love interest to read it, then shoot, I should read it too.

I will not lie — it took me a minute to get into it. Not knowing that this book was a part of a larger series, you can imagine the numerous questionable looking expressions on my face when I fell on weird ass city names, species of humans and the word kemmer which is like one of the MAJOR themes of the book.

Nonetheless, I continued to read and found myself getting increasingly immersed in it — especially because I had never read a book about an androgynous race of people. They are not androids, they’re not “aliens” in the sense that we know them, they’re a race of hermaphroditic beings that mate once a month almost on a menstrual cycle!

Consider my MIND #BLOWN. Add the fact that a person can be either man or woman at a different cycle?!?!?!? Could you imagine that?!

And this is why the people of their world  believe that there is no cause for war; there is no imbalance of hormones to create a feeling of superiority. At the same time, it’s awkward because there is no gender, the society is just a mass of the same people.

Anyway, I’m starting to enjoy the book because of its shift in narration — and because this book was published in like 1969. It’s pretty freaking amazing that this was around at a time where social constructs were being challenged, but at the same time remained very much rigid.

I’m at a point in the book now where POVs are about to converge and I’ll finally get to see them interact once more. I have to say this book is not necessarily an easy read, but some of the metaphors are beautiful and some of the quotes make me want to highlight them for forever.

As for everything else going on? I’ve halted on the period piece, despite the fact that I have the entire plot mapped out. Finding the words to move the plot can be so hard to do sometimes, and I don’t really want to force it. And my fantasy novel (pfft), I haven’t looked at the in a while. My novella is on hiatus BUT I intend to make a triumphant return and finish at least ONE this year … maybe … no, I have to. I just have to!

Mucho besitos!

Update…and still ashamed

Hello Darling Followers,

This update comes from a rather not so happy and doleful place. I’ll get straight to the point:

I haven’t added anything new to what should’ve been the novel I “completed in a summer.” It seems that while I may have the entire plot mapped out to perfection, the words just aren’t coming to me. And though I hate to make excuses, I find that nothing is moving forward because I really don’t have much time to breath, with everything else sucking up all my energy. I know, I know – “if you want something bad enough, you’ll make time for it,” but this everything around me is just like a sinkhole of concentration. I intended on selling some of my hobby pieces this summer and that is constantly being pushed further and further into the future as new circumstances are constantly arising and because of this, the writing aspect of my life which I want to become vastly devoted to is taking a dive because of it. *sigh* I could stay up late and write until the crack of dawn, but I get so bogged down mentally, that nothing happens.

I was supposed to go to a place not too far away for a day of relaxation and pure typing, but that didn’t happen. If I have my way, I’ll go soon…if…

I spoke with a friend the other day who told me that I should release some of my work, over a course of time, bit by bit to gain an audience and feedback and while I’ve started that with this post, I haven’t got much of a response which obviously has left a bad taste in my mouth. Is writing really for me?

Anyhow, I will try to continue on…and I’ll be doing so with a bit of “Erotic Fan-Fiction” but not on novels or T.V. shows or anything like that. Nope, just on men. Men, will be the source of this fiction- famous men…or at least men I find incredulously handsome and would love to get my hands on but know (in the front of my mind) that I never will. I got the idea from Tina (of Bob’s Burgers) cause she does the same…but with her friends…and zombies.

I’ve always wanted to do it, but thought that in a world with so much social media and googling and shiz, people would think that it was a real story but, now I don’t really care. I’ve been dreaming of these guys too frequently to not indulge in a little fantasy and well…get some writing done.

The first of these Fan-Fiction pieces will be called “The Elf & His Princess,” a mock interview piece that I wrote in high school about me and Orlando Bloom (when he was hot off the LOTR circuit). It’s long…and it’s out there, but it was based on like a four-part dream I had for several weeks so…yeah.

Day 15

While my personal life is going into disarray, I’ve decided to forge on and make moves with my writing. When I feel that I’ve exhausted my thought processes, I begin to read and so I’ve pulled a book off of my shelf and started to sift through it. While it’s a somewhat random choice, the nature of the book has both elements of fantasy and of mythology which coincides with both elements that I’m trying to work out in two separate stories.

I’ve started to read this charming piece of 360 some odd pages:

I haven’t made up my mind of if I like it or not, but I do love the idea that there are several narratives going on, with interconnecting characters and one first person narrative from a god-like being. I feel that this may help me hone the way in which I handle my own characters in my ancient egyptian mythological piece.

Alas, if I intend on finish any story before the new year, I only have three nights and two days to do so. I don’t think there’s any story I have that I can finish in that time unless I throw caution to the wind and make a really short story out of the many beginning lines that I have. Let’s see what I can do.

Fantasy Novel Excerpt – Excerpt

So, I’m trying to write a novel, three actually, but not simultaneously. That would be INSANE! But I had to transcribe what can only be described as the beginnings of three seperate “long” stories. I don’t know if they can actually be defined as novels seeing as they’re not complete, but eh, I’ll call ‘e, whatever I want!! =)

Anywho, this is the “fifth” chapter from my fantasy book. It’s still a work in progress, so be gentle with it. lol. So far, it’s the only chapter I think I was able to fully get out of my head. If you need the back story well, just know that it’s a tragic (yes, I know I don’t write a lot of happy endings) story of two elves (I love elves) who meet and fall for one another without knowing the true nature of the other. They still however, defy everything that they’ve known to be together and go on a quest to correct a wrong that might possibly destroy the very world they left behind.

Enjoy!

Chapter Five

~The New Queen~

In a not so distant kingdom, another Princess reveled in her newly appointed position. Sitting in the throne her beloved father sat on but a few days prior, Queen Inviera closed her eyes and inhaled the air surrounding her. With a smirk on her face, she awaited news from her servants of her betrothed Prince.

The kingdom of Terra Arcus was a bleak and dark place. Active volcanoes sat on the blackened cracked earth, sending puffs of charcoal clouds into the sky above. The Black Lake, which sat behind the kingdom, was irrigated into the village, creating veins of rippling, cool, dark fluid through out the lands. The homes were made of blackened timber and charred earth, with windows the shape of candle flames. The air was always warm and sometimes when the sun was high and the volcanoes billowed hot steam, it was as though the water vapor in the air burned at first contact of the skin.

Queen Inviera sat on her thrown, running her fingers along the edge of her ruby chiffon embroidered cloak, draped over her bare shoulders. She trailed her fingers along the red satin dress wrapped tightly around her body, pushing her already buxom bosoms into view.

She was named after the paper white snow flakes that her skin resembled, though her people derived from the Infliories, elves with the ability to manipulate fire and lightning. Her hair, an incandescent glow of crimson waves accented with strands of smoldering embers, was complimented by her arched lips, neatly colored in a shade of scarlet.

“Your majesty, it has been done,” said the male elf standing in front of her. Tall, with olive toned skin and short, curly, honey colored hair he bowed his head in the presence of the Queen.  A few strands of his hair fell onto his forehead and he placed his right arm and fist across his chest in respect of the woman who sat before him. Queen Inviera waved her hand, acknowledging his salute. He looked at her through his cat-like hazel eyes. The square cut diamond earring in his lower ear-lobe twinkled in the dimly lit room. He had a boyish charm to him that made most of the elf maidens at court swoon, but he had his heart set for one in particular.

He waited for the fiery-headed queen that sat before him to speak.

“Thank you, Lucqí?,” said Queen Inviera. “How successful were we?”

“Quite successful, my lady,” said the female elf that stood next to Lucqí. Luthia bowed her head and placed her hand to her chest with an open palm. She then faced her palm to the sky and moved her hand from left to right in the customary greeting fashion. It was a greeting derived from the reverence the Infliories had for the horizon that held all of the sun’s might in the power of its hand.

Luthìa’s long, loose and cascading curls bounced back and forth as she made the subtle movement. She was Lucqi’s mirror image, having the same cat-like hazel eyes and honey colored mane. And much like her twin brother, she was the desire of many lords and higher nobles. It was said that King Vieron of Terra Arcus showed much favor towards her before his passing. She, however, vowed to never have her heart ruled by any male elf.

“Was there any trouble Luthìa?” asked the Queen without looking.

“It is said that there may have been slight resistance my lady, but we are assured that it is being taken care of,” she said, bowing her head.

“Are we sure?” asked Inviera, who was now rising from her plush throne looking at the twin elves.

“Yes my lady,” said Lucqi, who now could not keep his eyes off of the new Queen. Lucqi quickly stepped towards the lavish chair, placing one arm behind his back and the other hand out stretched.

“Good,” Inviera said placing her palm into Lucqí’s embrace. He closed his fingers around her delicate hand, and looked into Inviera’s eyes as she took proud steps down the brass crafted stepping stool, away from her throne. She dropped her hand from Lucqi’s grip and Lucqi followed the Queen’s fingertips to her side.

“Why majesty, you are looking well today,” said Lucqí is a dream-like gaze.

Looking sideways at Lucqí, Inviera gave a slight smirk. The noble bowed his head. “Why, thank you,” replied Inviera. The pleasantries fed her maliciousness and calmed the rage slowly burning with in. She walked across the floor, with the train of her dress slithering behind her. The Baor fountain, a cleverly crafted structure in the shape of a coiled leopard snake, was erected in the middle of the throne room. The onyx fluid of the land expelled from the mouth of the snake, into the round basin. She stood looking into the small pool, watching the reflection staring back at her.

“Was the letter dispatched?” she asked, without turning her head.

“Yes, my lady,” they responded in unison. She closed her eyes and titled her head toward the opened doors across the hall. There was a balcony over-looking the entire kingdom. On either side of the balcony was a staircase that circled around the palace of Terra Arcus. From the balcony the new Queen could see the world she had lived in, the forests beyond her reach, the volcanoes at her side, and the mountains with ice as chilling as her heart.

“Well then, we shall wait to hear from them. If we miscalculated, we would just have to hasten plans.” And with that said, the twin infliori elves bowed and removed themselves from the throne room, and the new Queen parted her reddened lips, and smiled.

Day 10

I feel quite compelled to talk to you today, as today is the December 1st, and I started this thing off in high hopes of possibly finishing up a story before the end of the month of November.

As you can tell – I haven’t. The past few days had quite a lot of my time preoccupied with non-literature producing ‘things.’ I’ve also been working on the latest installment of my ‘Overthinking Disney’ (the first installment you can find here) and it looks like that one just may be a doozy.

Aside from that, my well for one story is drying up, while I might be finding some hope for another. I will finish at least one story before the new year. If I have to travel to the library with my macbook every day after work and sit there until it closes every night cause I need some of that time to be inside of myself and stay there for a while.

Finished reading Christopher Moore’s Fool  and I must say, I wish I had his humor and talent.

I will persevere…I think..?

Day 3

I wanted to write last night, and the night before but found myself insanely tired and drowsy.

As of the last two days, I’ve been reading through some of my Ancient Egyptian books, specifically the books on mythology. I started a story back in junior high school (at the height of my Ancient Egyptian obsession) about a girl of middle eastern-asian descent and I wanted some myth and lore of AE in it. Now that I’m committing myself to complete most of my unfinished works, I’m hitting these mythology books on the train, which is my best time for reading.

Currently reading: Legends of the Egyptian Gods by E.A. Wallis Budge
Ancient Egyptian Myths and Legends by Lewis Spence
Egyptian Mythology by Veronica Ions

I realize this maybe one of the more harder tasks I’ve decided to take on, as I’ve got to decide which AE mythology system (upper, middle or lower egypt) mythology I want to focus on =/

But, I will persevere.

Inspiration: Thinking…

Inspiration for my dark but beautiful Queen.
As of late, I’ve been thinking about what to do with myself, and as much as I want to write, I find myself lacking the inspiration that came to me. Unfortunately I do not have my camera to take out photos of the lush untamed natural life here in Baltimore suburbs, but I did think about this picture I found online, depicting what I think my dastardly queen should look like. I posted the chapter on her. What do you think? Anyone…
