Hey, y’all!
Your girl is back — and it didn’t even take me a whole month, either. See, I’m trying to do right by you all…
In any event, I have some cool nerdy news for you all and some of it has me all kinds of excited. Are you ready to head into the Nerd Girl Corner with me?
Leh go…
First up, several new trailers dropped this past week including the first trailer for the (hopefully) final Wolverine solo installment, Logan, also dropped this week. Though I’m not a big fan of the metal-clawed mutant being to have a solo film — nor am I a fan of the previous Wolvie movies — this one seems to catch my interest.
Instead of having aging actor Hugh Jackman continue to play flashbacks where he looks older than he did at the start of the X-Men franchise, this final movie sees Logan old as dirt with his abilities waning. Professor Xavier is also hella old and he looks to have cataracts in his eyes, too.
For whatever reason, the two are paired together (probably because their Days of Future Past mission still didn’t keep people from killing out mutants) and they’ve got a little girl in tow. According to reports, she’s X-23 — a female version of Wolverine that was genetically altered into a weapon.
Funnyman Stephen Merchant also joins the flick as Caliban, the albino-looking member of the Morlocks.
From the trailer, Logan seems like it will give Wolvy fans everything they want: action, drama, and tons of angsty Hugh Jackman. It’ll also continue in the time-honored tradition of inconsistency since X-Men Apocalypse already introduced tracker Caliban (the pasty dude who was working with Psylocke? Yeah, him) to us in the 1980s… and I’m pretty sure the movie will gloss over that as all X-Men films do.
Moving On…
Speaking of sequels, the first teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 along with a poster showing the returning crew of misfits — and a baby Groot.
Check out the teaser here:
While the plot isn’t quite explained the cool nerds at SourceFed have taken the honor of breaking down the trailer (so I won’t have to) to reveal some possible allegiances, villains, and everything in between.
Though I was sorta pumped to see the first GoTG, I can’t say I’m like out-my-mind ready-to-nerdgasm with this sequel, however, I must admit that I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how baby Groot will play into things.
Last but not least, we have some rather interesting and sad news with regards to something I am eager to see, Deadpool 2. Word has it several new mutants will be joining the anti-hero including one of my personal faves, Domino.
Seems like there’s a shortlist of actresses testing for the role including but not limited to Lizzy Caplan, Ruby Rose, Mary Elizabeth Winstead,Sofia Boutella, Stephanie Sigman, Sylvia Hoeks, Mackenzie Davis, Eve Hewson, and Kelly Rohrbach.
Considering I only know about 4/9 of these actors, I’m not sure if I have any real preference on who has the chops to play Domino, though I think Ruby has the best look, Lizzy has the humor and Mary’s got the flair for drama. When you throw athleticism into the mix, I really couldn’t say.
Now, for the bad news… it turns out the Deadpool 2 director Tim Miller has bowed out from directing the second film due to “creative differences” with Ryan Reynolds.
While it’s a bit of a blow (’cause you know the direction of the movie can shift and make it a total crapper), with any hope, Ryan’s performance — as well as all the cool extras coming in — will make the blockbuster a triumph.
Now for some honorable mentions:
- The first trailer for the new Power Rangers reboot movie is out and chile, it’s dark! And you know what, I likes it. Take a look:They do a bit of gender/ethnic swapping by making the Black Ranger an Asian guy, the Blue Ranger a black guy, and the Yello Ranger a Latina (versus the original which had the Yellow Ranger as an Asian woman and the Black Ranger a black man). Also, the Pink Ranger appears to have a bit of a backbone unlike the Kimberly on the TV show for often needed her male counterparts to get her out of trouble. All in all, I’m down to see how they’re turning the cheesy-but-lovable show on its head.
- The Stars Wars Hans Solo prequel has added the talented (and dare I say handsomely geeky) Donald Glover to the roster as a young Lando Calrissian aka Billy Dee Williams. I imagine the panties of every nerd girl out there immediately melted at the news. And I’m sure Donald had an equally guttural reaction to the news…
Congrats to the Don!
- The final trailer for Arrival arrived this week, and it’s definitely caught my eye. In case you’re unaware, it’s this alien arrival/potential world domination flick starring Amy Adams, who seems to love her fair share of aliens (you know, ’cause Superman..). Anywho, she’s a linguist and the government hires her to crack the alien speak and she does and then ish hits the fan ’cause humans are stupid and love to react to things they don’t know with outright violence.
Though I’m personally kinda tired of these alien movies, I think I’d be down to watch if the twist is that they’re really NOT here for domination but need to refuel or are coming to like help with global warming or something. *shrugs*
Aside from that, the only other things worth mentioning are my new articles at The Mary Sue, which you are more than welcomed to check out talking about the Harley Quinn solo film and Issa Rae’s Insecure.
Oh, and if you’re interested, you can read my Insecure recaps and roundtable discussions with fellow fans at Black Girl Nerds. You know, if you’re into that stuff.
And that’s it for now! Keep geeking out, folks and you guys are more than welcome to holla at a girl on Twitter to keep her on her toes.
