Happy New Year, Lovelies!
It’s nearing the end of the first month of the year and I’m officially back to bring you guys the latest in nerdy nummies. While some of this news isn’t so “new,” for the sake of this post, let’s pretend you haven’t seen it yet because I’ve got some feelings I’m ready to share. Are you ready? Cool, let’s get started!
First up in NGC news: The Suicide Squad trailer.
The first teaser was officially dropped in July after it was leaked following San Diego Comic Con (see below for refresher).
Damn near 6 months later, DC decided to drop a second trailer to take it all in.
After watching the official trailer, my opinion of the teaser remained in that I have no real issue with the flick. I don’t know much about the Suicide Squad except for the DC cartoon movie, Arkham Asylum, the man made me watch with him.
In both trailers, Viola Davis is owning Amanda Waller (as expected). Jared Leto is eerily cute and creepy as The Joker, and there really isn’t much of the other characters to make a good assessment other than Killer Croc’s CGI, and Enchantress’ goth girl grunge magic. Margo Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Will Smith’s Dead Shot get quite a bit of shine, but it all looks pretty cool and there may even be some origin stories via flashbacks for some of the characters, which may be nice for those (like myself) who aren’t aware of all of the SS members.
Hang ups? From watching Batman as a kid, I’ve always known Harley to have a certain voice thanks to Tara Strong and Arleen Sorkin. From the trailer, it doesn’t seem Margo is going in that direction.
Also, I’ve come to know Harley as ditzy, but by NO means an idiot. After all, she was a psychiatrist at Arkham. My only hope is that they found a nice medium between her insanity and her intelligence. They’re already giving the guy folk Robbie in booty shorts, long blonde hair, and high heels. I need a girl who’s smart and lethal, too.
With that said, I will add that I appreciate Jared’s attempt at a Mark Hamill/Jack Nicholson tone of voice. While I don’t find his tattoos or grills particularly scary (let’s face it, he will always be cute), his voice is giving me a couple feels. Also, the posters are pretty.
Moving on…
In addition to the DC universe rolling out #SKWAD, they’re also pushing the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice movie and added a first look at Wonder Woman!
DC’s even gone a step further and unveiled a snippet of WW’s first solo film in an attempt to get people more psyched for BvS film that will be introducing her.
Why a production company would be marketing two films concurrently is beyond me, but I’m guessing the hype of BvS has died down some since the glib, dark appeal is wearing thin on moviegoers like myself. I’d prefer to see more trailers with dialogue interspersed with action shots — especially since Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is seemingly more annoying than I thought he’d be. Lord, that wig!
I think I spoke about it already, but they could’ve gotten him a better lace wig than that heinous thing. They should’ve called Beyonce’s people and asked for a better hair piece.
Either way, the Wonder Woman clip wasn’t the only thing that rolled out of the DC Universe. CW’s Legends of Tomorrow special revealed the Justice League heroes making cameos in the BvS movie — as well as the actors portraying them. Most of these characters will have their own solo movies as well as take part in the forthcoming Justice League film.
*Note* There wasn’t an actor present for the Green Lantern, but he’s said to be joining the league. Guess they haven’t decided whether to take Tyrese’s offer to play the guy…
And last but not least…
We shall discuss the matter of Chambit. Yes, that thing we were kinda scared of some time ago. Well, Chambit — the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum — is definitely happening, contrary to previous reports and it’s supposed to begin production in March.
Though there is a release date for October 2016, it’s highly likely the movie will be pushed back about a year because you know, big movie budgets can allot for that.
While there are a lot of unknowns, what we do know is that Parisian actress Lea Seydoux will be playing his love interest, Bella Donna Bourdeaux and the film will be set in New Orleans.

Honorable mentions. Since quite a bit has happened since I last chatted with you peeps so here’s a run down of all the other things I’m psyched about:
- Penny Dreadful premiere date and teaser trailers! My goddess, Eva Green, is returning for a third season of Penny Dreadful with an official release date of May 1, 2016.
In the teaser trailers below. Sir Malcolm doesn’t make much of an appearance, as I hope he’s in Africa bringing dead on Sembene back to life. YES, I’m holding out hope! We’re also being introduced to several new characters, with one having an interest in Vanessa Ives, and another being a female with unknown intentions hanging with Brona-Lily and Dorian.
In the micro teasers we see an unhinged Victor with a male character, who may be none other than Dr. Henry Jeckyll (and Mr. Hyde). Actress Patti Lupone, who will return as a different character, albeit linked to Vanessa as another confidant. Bring on the madness!
- Tales From the Crypt is getting a reboot, but I’m already unsettled by the news for two reasons: M. Night Shyamalan is running the show, and the Crypt Keeper (voiced by John Kassir) isn’t coming back. The tales from original ’90s show aren’t coming back either. BOOO.
While I expected new stories to be a part of the TNT deal, the fact that none of my favorite creeper stories are getting an update already got me feeling like…
- Cate Blanchett is probably joining the Marvel universe in another Thor sequel. Rumor has it Mark Ruffalo is campaigning for the actress to play the Enchantress, Thor’s seductive arch nemesis.

When it comes to Cate, she can do no wrong for me really, so bring on the evil Galadriel!
- The Daredevil Season 2 trailer is out, and it’s pretty promising. No, I have not completed the first season as I ought to, though I have been making some headway through Jessica Jones (which got renewed for a second season!).
Elektra and The Punisher are going to be key players in Season 2 and hopefully I would’ve finished the first season to enjoy this new one.
- Last but not least, rumor has it another X-Men movie may be happening. Leaked artwork for the film — which apparently has been in the works for over two years — made its way online recently.
An IMDB site has already been created for it, but there’s no further news. From the look of the pic, it’ll be a 5-person cast with Cable, Warpath and Domino, and a flying Cannonball. The other character looks like Rogue, but probably isn’t. There may be a chance my girl Psylocke could make a cameo, but as with everything in life, it’s not guaranteed.
There’s also a bit of news about that The Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella. Well, its happening and it’s set for a 2017 release date. It will be set in the present time unlike the original The Mummy flicks with Brendan Fraser. Whether or not I like the idea of this will be discussed in the next edition of NGN. I’ve held your attention for long enough.
Until then, keep geeking folks and feel free to drop a line in the comments or hit me up on le Twitter!
